This is the last in a series of three books on Napoleon’s greatest victories at Marengo, Austerlitz and Jena. Victories that established his military reputation and secured his political power as First Consul and then as Emperor. Yet these victories were won by the French armies and their new revolutionary way of waging war, as much as by Napoleon’s leadership. In the wake of these three victories, came a new outlook, a new way of doing things. Nations of the ancien regime would have to adapt, at first militarily, but then in every other way. Jena and Auerstaedt brought the French Grande Armée and Napoleon to the apogee of their power. The 1806-7 campaign also showed the nature, genius and limits of Napoleon’s leadership.The book starts with an overview of the 1806 campaign and a focus on the twin battles of Jena-Auerstaedt. It then looks at the uniforms of each participant, examining the battle from their differing perspectives, in closer detail.
